A 33-year-old Wapakoneta man has been sentenced to 204 months, or 17 years, in federal prison after pleading guilty to charges involving the receipt, distribution and transportation of child sexual abuse material. Seth Jacob Schwerin's case began with a single cybertip that federal investigators traced back to his home in Auglaize County.
According to wcsmradio.com, federal investigators opened the case after receiving a cybertip about child sexual abuse material that had been uploaded to an online platform and distributed to an undercover agent. That tip led agents to identify Schwerin, and investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at his residence, where electronic devices were seized and examined, as WLIO also reported.
Examination of those devices showed that Schwerin had received, possessed, distributed and transported images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of minors, with the conduct occurring between approximately August 2021 and January 2025, per the same account. Schwerin ultimately pleaded guilty to the receipt, distribution and transportation charges tied to that conduct.
Sentencing Terms and Financial Penalty
Beyond the 17-year prison term, Schwerin was ordered to serve 15 years of supervised release once he is released from custody. He was also ordered to pay $5,000 under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act, the station's report notes.
The federal statute governing these offenses, 18 U.S. Code Section 2252A, states that a person who violates or attempts to violate the provision involving receipt or transportation may be fined and imprisoned for not less than five years and not more than 30 years, according to the U.S. Code, House.gov. Schwerin's 204-month sentence falls within that statutory range.
Multiple Agencies Involved in Investigation
The investigation drew on resources from several agencies working together, including Homeland Security Investigations in Cleveland, the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Wapakoneta Police Department and the Auglaize County Sheriff's Office, per the same report. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tracey Ballard Tangeman prosecuted the case.
