A 64-year-old cashier at the Shaw's supermarket on Warwick Avenue is now banned from the store after police say she approached a shopper in the parking lot and beat her following a dispute over bagging groceries. Miriam Aguilar, of 17 Granger Ct. in Warwick, was arrested on Sept. 6 on initial charges of assault and disorderly conduct.
Police officers Noah Kane and Kristopher Orellana were called to the store at 320 Warwick Ave. at 5:08 p.m. that day, according to WarwickPost. The 46-year-old shopper told officers that Aguilar had been rude to her at the register and refused to help bag her larger grocery items, prompting the customer to tell the cashier, “Fine, I'll do it myself.”
Confrontation Escalates in the Parking Lot
The dispute didn't end at the checkout. Per the shopper's account to police, as she left the store and headed to her car, she heard Aguilar approaching and yelling, “I'll be your b***h now.” Aguilar then allegedly pushed the woman's face hard enough to knock her to the ground, according to the police report cited by WarwickPost.
From there, the account says, Aguilar pulled the shopper's hair and punched her repeatedly until a passerby intervened and stopped the attack. The same report notes that the altercation only ended once that bystander stepped in.
Charges, Orders, and Case Status
Officer Kane arrested Aguilar that day, and a separate WarwickPost roundup of the department's September activity confirms the arrest came amid a busy month for local police, who made 166 arrests during that period. Aguilar initially faced both assault and disorderly conduct charges.
A later update from the outlet's report states that the disorderly conduct charge was dismissed and that Aguilar pleaded no contest to the assault charge. As part of the case resolution, she received a no-contact order covering the shopper, identified in that report as Anna Tomasello, along with a no-trespassing order barring her from the Warwick Avenue Shaw's.
