Norfolk is headed for a record-challenging 92-degree afternoon Wednesday, followed by a sharp swing toward chilly, windy weekend weather. Clear skies and light southwest winds will dominate today before temperatures fall back into the upper 60s overnight.

The National Weather Service says Wednesday’s heat could break Norfolk’s October 14 record of 86 degrees, set in 1975. The air should feel less oppressive than the temperature suggests, with dry air mixing in during the afternoon and rain chances staying near zero.

Brief Cooldown Arrives Thursday

A southbound cold front will bring a much cooler Thursday, with partly sunny skies and a high near 74 degrees. Northeast winds will run about 6 to 14 mph, and a few light showers are possible, although the overall rain chance remains low, according to the National Weather Service.

Friday brings one more warm day, with sunshine and a high near 88 degrees. Southwest winds will pick up, and showers become more likely Friday night after 8 p.m. as a stronger front approaches.

Weekend Brings Rain, Wind And Fall Temperatures

Rain showers are likely Friday night, with a 60% chance of precipitation and a low near 55 degrees. Saturday could start with a few lingering showers before skies clear, but temperatures will struggle to reach 62 degrees as north winds blow 18 to 22 mph, with stronger gusts near the coast.

The forecast is a notable update from Tuesday’s outlook, which had Norfolk closer to 89 degrees Wednesday and a less sharply defined weekend turn. Hoodline’s earlier forecast had already flagged the potential for record heat, but the latest update raises Wednesday’s high and increases confidence in rough marine conditions from Friday night into Saturday.

Sunday looks sunny and calmer, though still cool, with a high near 64 degrees and an overnight low around 51. By Monday and Tuesday, temperatures should recover modestly into the upper 60s and low 70s under mostly sunny skies.
