The twin towers rising along the Hudson River in Weehawken have reached a new milestone: both reinforced concrete superstructures have topped out, and crews are now wrapping the buildings in glass curtain walls with curved corner panels and gold-hued trim along the floor plates. The project, known as 1800 Avenue at Port Imperial or 1800 WHK, is a 282-unit condominium development split between two eight-story buildings, with exterior work progressing as of Monday.
According to New York YIMBY, the northern building is further along in construction than its southern counterpart, and both structures are being enclosed in glass curtain walls featuring curved panels at the corners. The buildings will also feature recessed and protruding balconies, stepped setbacks on their eastern upper levels, and green roofs once complete, the outlet reports. Eastern-facing units are expected to offer panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline. Handel Architects was involved in the design, while New York YIMBY identifies Scope as the design architect, architect of record, and interior designer; Future Green Studio handled the landscape design, per the same outlet.
A June construction update from Field Condition offers a snapshot of how far the project had come by early summer: curtain wall panels were being installed on the north building, whose superstructure was close to topping out, while the south building trailed behind at the seventh floor. That same report confirmed the two eight-story buildings were designed by Handel Architects.
A Waterfront Address With Transit at Its Doorstep
The development sits in Weehawken's Port Imperial neighborhood, bounded by Avenue at Port Imperial, East Columbia Terrace, Weehawken Waterfront Pershing Circle, and the 9/11 Memorial Weehawken, according to New York YIMBY. The site is also near the Port Imperial Ferry terminal, which provides access to Midtown Manhattan, the outlet notes. Separately, Hudson Reporter has reported that the new condos will be within walking distance of both the Port Imperial Ferry and light rail stations.
Port Imperial itself is a much larger stretch of waterfront development, spanning roughly 2.5 miles across Weehawken and West New York, according to Handel Architects. The broader district already contains more than 7,500 rental and for-sale apartments and townhomes alongside 150,000 square feet of retail space, per RE-NJ, which identified WHK Waterfront Urban Renewal LLC as the project's developer. 1800 WHK is a Handel-designed project in the area, according to Field Condition.
Amenities Built for Resort-Style Living
Once finished, the project will include 20,000 square feet of indoor residential amenities, per Handel Architects. Those indoor offerings are set to include a residential lounge, an indoor-outdoor swimming pool, a spa, fitness center, half basketball court, multimedia room, children's playroom, game room, library, and co-working space, the firm states. Outdoors, residents will have access to a swimming pool, dining and kitchen stations, a sun deck, a fire pit, and lounge seating, according to the same source.
The design also calls for a new public plaza situated between the two buildings, a shared outdoor space meant to anchor the development's street-level presence, per Handel Architects. The facade itself features curved corners, fluid metal banding, and smooth glazing.
Financing, Foreclosure, and Conflicting Completion Dates
The project has a complicated financial backstory. The site fell into foreclosure in 2022 after its previous owner ran into financial trouble, according to Jersey Digs, before construction officially began in 2024 under new ownership. The project later secured $210 million in financing from Benefit Street Partners, split between a $157.5 million senior loan and a $52.5 million mezzanine loan, according to Hudson County View, which also named Plaza Construction as the project's general contractor.
Total cost estimates vary by outlet. Jersey Digs reported the project would see a total investment of $313 million, while NJBIZ Magazine put the total estimated development cost at $313.2 million. Completion timing is similarly unsettled: earlier reporting from Multi-Housing News pegged the project for completion in summer 2026, while the project's own website lists an estimated September 2027 completion date for amenities, subject to construction and other conditions. New York YIMBY reports that 1800 Avenue at Port Imperial is anticipated to be completed sometime in 2027.
For comparison, nearby West New York is also seeing new luxury construction: RB3, a 426-unit community from Canoe Brook Development, secured a $150 million construction loan and was slated for completion in late 2026, according to Multi-Housing News. Back in Weehawken, the 3.65-acre site that houses 1800 WHK continues to take shape one floor and one glass panel at a time, with the northern tower's further progress offering the clearest sign yet of how the finished project will look.
