Wesley Chapel officially has its own YMCA. The Mary W. Sierra Family YMCA opened its doors on Sept. 28, a two-story, 49,319-square-foot facility built at a cost of $35 million, and more than 6,300 members had already signed up before the ribbon was even cut.

The facility sits at 4379 Wellbeing Way, right next to BayCare Hospital Wesley Chapel, and was developed in partnership with BayCare Health System, which leased the land to the Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA, according to Tampa Bay Beacons. Tampa Metropolitan YMCA President and CEO Matt Mitchell said BayCare made the land available on affordable long-term terms, according to Neighborhood News, though the specific financial terms of that arrangement were not detailed. The land lease itself traces back to the YMCA's own announcement that it would build a state-of-the-art facility in Wesley Chapel, per Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA.

A Long Road From Groundbreaking to Grand Opening

Getting here took years. As the Tampa Bay Times notes, Wesley Chapel finally has its own YMCA after years of planning that began with plans first announced in late 2020, with an initial target of opening in 2023. Construction crews didn't break ground until May 28, 2025, the station's report indicates. Speaking at the opening, Mitchell said the project had been six years in the making, a timeline confirmed by the same account.

The scope of the project grew considerably from what was originally pitched. Tampa Bay Beacons reports that the final product exceeded both earlier projections, which had called for a roughly 30,000-square-foot, $15 million facility. Separately, earlier planning coverage from the Tampa Bay Times described the facility as 50,000 square feet, a figure that differs slightly from the 49,319 square feet reported after opening.

Pools, a Waterslide and a Full Gym Under One Roof

Inside, the campus features an aquatics center with lap and teaching pools alongside a family adventure pool complete with a waterslide, per Tampa Bay Beacons. The building also houses a gymnasium, group exercise studios and a fitness center, the same report notes. Families with young kids can use the Stay & Play childcare center, while the YMCA's own location page lists offerings that range from youth sports and swim lessons to Kids' Day Out and group exercise classes.

Membership interest built well ahead of the opening. More than 100 families joined within the first few days of online presales, according to the YMCA's own account of excitement building in Wesley Chapel. That early momentum carried through to opening day, when more than 6,300 members had already signed up, per the Beacons' report.

Serving a Fast-Growing Corner of Pasco County

The YMCA says the new facility is expected to serve roughly 40,000 households in the surrounding area and create more than 300 jobs, according to Tampa Bay Beacons. The organization estimates its immediate service area includes more than 27,000 children and 20,000 seniors, the outlet reports. A separate account from Bay News 9 put the number of children within a 10-minute drive of the facility at more than 25,000, alongside about 20,000 seniors nearby — slightly different figures that may reflect different geographic boundaries.

For a community that has waited since 2020 for this project to materialize, the opening marks the end of a long wait and the start of what the YMCA hopes will be a major new fitness and wellness hub for fast-growing Wesley Chapel.
