A Willard, Ohio man has been sentenced to 292 months, more than 24 years, in federal prison after pleading guilty to receipt and distribution of child sexual abuse materials and to being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. U.S. District Judge Jeffrey J. Helmick handed down the sentence to Ricardo Gibson, whose case began with a tip from an online marketplace seller more than three years ago.
According to Cleveland 19 News, federal agents began investigating Gibson in May 2023 after a seller on an online marketplace reported that a buyer had sent her provocative images of young girls and expressed sexual interest in children through the platform's chat function. That tip set off an investigation that would ultimately uncover thousands of illegal files on Gibson's devices. The Highland County Press reported that federal agents identified Gibson as the buyer behind the chat messages.
What Agents Found Inside Gibson's Home
When investigators searched Gibson's residence, they recovered two cellphones, adult sex toys, little girls' clothing, two handguns, three magazines and 19 rounds of 9 mm ammunition, per the Cleveland 19 News account. Forensic analysis of his electronic devices later turned up roughly 6,448 files containing child sexual abuse material, the station reported.
The firearms charge carried extra weight because of Gibson's history. He had a previous conviction for the same offense, felon in possession of a firearm, back in 2002, according to the same report. That prior conviction made his possession of the two handguns and ammunition found in the recent search a separate federal crime on top of the abuse-materials charges.
Sentence Includes Payments to Victims, Decades of Supervision
Beyond the prison term, Gibson was ordered to pay $42,000 in reparations to victims and will serve 20 years of supervised release once he completes his sentence, the station's report states. The case was investigated jointly by the FBI Toledo Resident Agency, the Huron County Sheriff's Office and the Willard Police Department, according to 13abc.
The prosecution was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, which the U.S. Department of Justice describes as a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative, led by U.S. attorneys' offices across the country, is intended to marshal federal, state and local resources to locate, apprehend and prosecute people who exploit children via the internet and to identify and rescue victims, per the U.S. Department of Justice.
Part of a Broader Pattern in Ohio Courts
Gibson's case is not an isolated one in the state. The FBI reported that Robert L. Scarvelli of Sheffield Lake, Ohio, was separately sentenced to 107 months, or 8 years and 9 months, in federal prison after pleading guilty to receipt and distribution of child sexual abuse materials. A Lake County man was also sentenced to 20 years in prison on similar charges, according to the Department of Justice.
