Williamson County has secured $7 million in federal funding to build a new road connection south of Taylor, part of a project officials are calling Corridor A2. The money is earmarked for a roadway running from FM 3349 to SH 95, aimed at easing congestion and giving truckers an alternative route to busy U.S. 79.

County officials say Corridor A2 is designed to improve safety, reduce congestion, strengthen east-west connectivity and provide that alternative freight route for U.S. 79, according to KXAN Austin. U.S. Rep. Pete Sessions helped secure the federal funding, the county says. “Securing this $7 million is part of our continued commitment to preparing Williamson County for the future,” Sessions said, according to the station's report.

Sessions tied the funding to broader goals beyond just pavement. “By working together and investing in transportation infrastructure, we are supporting job growth, strengthening our communities and ensuring Williamson County is ready for the opportunities ahead,” he said, per the same account.

County Leaders Point to Population Growth

Williamson County Judge Steve Snell framed the investment as a response to the county's rapid growth. “As more families and businesses make Williamson County their home, investments in our road infrastructure are essential to improving mobility, supporting economic development and keeping our communities connected,” Snell said, the station notes.

Snell also said the county needed to plan for future transportation needs as it grows, the report adds. That growth is substantial: a county growth summary estimates Williamson County's population could reach 1.6 million by 2050, more than double its current population of 727,480, according to the Williamson County Growth at a Glance report. Separately, the East Wilco Insider has reported officials expect the county's population could double to around 1.6 million by that same year.

What's Known — and Not Known — About the Route

Williamson County's own website describes a planned road connection running from FM 3349 to SH 95 south of Taylor, and says the roadway is being built in phases to address safety, mobility and connectivity in eastern Williamson County, according to the Williamson County Corridor A2 page. County bond program records also show the final schematic for the project was approved on Aug. 26, 2025.

Part of a Broader Pattern of Road Investment

Corridor A2 isn't the only road project reshaping eastern Williamson County. The East Wilco Insider has described the East Wilco Highway as a $94 million north-to-south artery built in seven segments as a controlled-access roadway. The outlet also reported that county commissioners approved an additional budget earmark of roughly $25 million for the FM 3349-U.S. 79 Interchange Project.

The county has pursued similar road upgrades before. A 2022 report from the Austin American-Statesman described plans for a four-lane road to be built near Taylor's Samsung site, intended to provide a straighter, safer connection in the area. Taken together, the projects reflect a county racing to keep its road network ahead of a population boom that shows no signs of slowing.
