An 89-year-old Williamston woman has died days after a two-car crash at a busy Anderson intersection, succumbing to her injuries at the hospital on Saturday morning. Delores Cox was riding as a passenger in a vehicle that was struck on its side when the crash happened earlier in the week, and she never recovered.
The wreck happened at Clemson Boulevard and East West Parkway, according to WSPA, which reported that officials were called out Wednesday, October 14, for the two-car collision. Anderson County 911 received the call at 5:40 p.m. that day, and first responders who arrived on scene treated multiple patients, according to WYFF.
Cox was a passenger in a car that was struck on the passenger side, the station reported, and she was wearing a seatbelt at the time of impact. She was taken to AnMed, where she died from her injuries on Saturday, three days after the crash, the station's report notes. FOX Carolina News, which identified Cox as the Williamston woman who died following the crash, reported the same sequence of events.
Cause and Manner of Death Ruled
The cause of death was ruled as multiple traumatic injuries, and the manner of death was ruled accidental, per the same account from WYFF. The crash remains under investigation by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner and the City of Anderson Police Department, the station said.
No additional details about the other driver involved, the other vehicle, or whether any citations were issued have been released as the investigation continues.
A Deadly Year on Anderson County Roads
Cox's death adds to a grim tally of road fatalities in Anderson County this year. At least 35 people have died in Anderson County crashes in 2026, compared with 37 people who died in wrecks there in 2025, according to The State. That outlet also reported that three people were killed in as many days in separate crashes in Anderson County in a stretch of recent wrecks, including a motorcyclist identified by the Anderson County Coroner's Office as 26-year-old Belton resident Jacob Chase Scroggins, who died after his 2026 Honda motorcycle left River Road and struck a tree near Tall Oaks Circle.
That same string of crashes claimed 23-year-old Austin Chandler Allison of Gainesville, Georgia, after a Dodge Ram pickup he was riding in crashed into an embankment on River Road, and 59-year-old Seneca resident Judith Anne Hathaway, a pedestrian struck by a Ford pickup on the S.C. 28 Bypass in Anderson, both on Sept. 24.
County Has Pushed Safety Planning Amid Toll
The county's crash toll has drawn scrutiny before. Anderson County recorded 220 fatal crashes between 2017 and 2021, including 41 pedestrian deaths, and in 2020 it had the highest pedestrian fatality rate of any county in South Carolina, according to the Independent Mail.
In response, the county received a $200,000 Safe Streets for All grant, paired with a $50,000 local match, to develop a Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, the Independent Mail reported. That plan is intended to establish projects aimed at achieving zero roadway fatalities by 2045.
