A Separate Case Shares Her Name
A January report from mynewsla.com described a 14-year-old Kushani Boyd who had been found after an Ebony Alert was canceled, with that girl last seen near Sicily Lane and San Remo Drive in French Valley. The age in both accounts is 14; the January report places her near Sicily Lane and San Remo Drive in French Valley, while this alert concerns an incident near San Remo Drive and Matino Lane in Winchester. Whether the two reports concern the same person or incident remains unclear.
How California's Ebony Alert System Works
Ebony Alerts are designed to help locate missing Black children, teenagers and young adults between the ages of 12 and 25 under specified risk circumstances, per the same mynewsla.com report. The program traces back to Senate Bill 673, which became law in 2024 and was later amended by Assembly Bill 173, establishing California Government Code Section 8594.14, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The system has a track record of results, though gaps remain. The Ebony Alert had been deployed 31 times and helped recover 27 people as of October 2024, according to figures the California Highway Patrol gave to NBC News.
Other Recent Cases in the Region
Boyd's case follows a string of recent Ebony Alerts across Southern California. In Los Angeles County, the CHP issued an alert for 16-year-old Serenity Dalton, who disappeared from El Segundo around 3 p.m. on October 18 on behalf of the El Segundo Police Department, according to KTLA. Closer to home, Riverside County authorities issued an Ebony Alert in December for 12-year-old Lewis Norman, last seen near Scholar Way and Orange Street in Eastvale, with the CHP again acting on behalf of the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, per the mynewsla.com report on that case. In one earlier success story highlighted by NBC News, officers pinged a missing teen's phone two hours after an Ebony Alert went out, reuniting Lelah Banks with her mother roughly three hours after the alert was issued.
No update on Boyd's whereabouts has been released since the alert went out. Anyone with information on her location is asked to call 911.
