WinCo Foods has recalled certain 16-ounce packages of its store-brand hoagie rolls after United States Bakery determined that the packaging failed to list sesame flour, a known allergen that can trigger life-threatening reactions. The rolls were sold across seven Western states, and shoppers who bought them can return the product to any WinCo location for a refund.
The recall covers packages marked with UPC 2-70552-00649-2 and best-by dates ranging from September 10, 2026, to November 3, 2026, according to the Idaho Statesman. Idaho-based WinCo Foods announced the recall in an October 22 news release, and the affected hoagie rolls reached store shelves in California, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington, as reported by the Sacramento Bee.
The problem traces back to United States Bakery, which determined that its hoagie roll packaging did not declare sesame flour in either the ingredient list or the allergen statement. WinCo initiated the recall after that determination, and the company says no illnesses had been reported as of the notice, per the same Idaho Statesman account.
Why Sesame Exposure Is Serious
For people with a sesame allergy or severe sensitivity, consuming the recalled rolls could trigger a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction, the Idaho Statesman report notes. According to the Sacramento Bee, a sesame allergy can cause anaphylaxis, breathing issues, cardiovascular distress, hives and gastrointestinal problems, and severe allergic reactions can turn life-threatening without prompt treatment.
Sesame was already required to be listed as an ingredient in the United States before 2023. Under the FASTER Act, sesame was designated the ninth major food allergen, and as of January 1 of that year, it must be declared as a major allergen on packaged foods and dietary supplements sold nationwide, according to the FDA.
What Affected Customers Should Do
