A woman and a roughly 4-year-old child were struck by a vehicle Sunday afternoon in the 500 block of Las Palmas Avenue in Sacramento, according to police. The child suffered minor injuries, while accounts of the woman's condition differ depending on the source.
Sacramento police officers responded to the scene around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, according to KCRA, after two pedestrians were hit by a car. The station reported that the woman was hospitalized with major injuries and later pronounced dead. The child, police said, suffered only minor injuries.
Driver Stayed Put as Investigation Opens
The driver involved in the crash remained at the scene, the station's report states, and the crash remains under investigation. No further details have been released about what led up to the collision, including who had the right of way or whether the driver now faces any citations.
Officials have not released the names of the woman, the child, or the driver, and the exact circumstances of the crash — including the vehicle's direction of travel — have not been made public. The child's condition beyond the initial report of minor injuries has also not been detailed.
A Stretch of Road With a Recent Deadly History
Las Palmas Avenue has seen fatal traffic violence before. In February 2020, a pedestrian was killed in a crash near Rio Linda Boulevard and Las Palmas Avenue, according to KCRA, in an incident that happened around 6:10 p.m.
Sunday's crash also lands amid a broader citywide reckoning with traffic deaths. A Sacramento Police Department count cited by CBS Sacramento put the 2025 total at 40 people killed in vehicle crashes citywide, with traffic safety advocates worried that 2026's toll could climb even higher. Separately, The Sacramento Bee reported that vehicle crashes killed at least 32 people in the city in 2025 alone.
The pattern isn't new. The Bee previously reported that 38 crashes killed 44 people on Sacramento streets in 2023, with 17 of those deaths involving pedestrians, prompting city officials to weigh declaring a state of emergency over road safety. Sunday's crash on Las Palmas Avenue adds another entry to that grim tally as police continue piecing together what happened.
