A woman died after sustaining life-threatening gunshot injuries in a shooting in the 5700 block of East Virginia Beach Boulevard in Norfolk on Saturday night. A suspect was detained at the scene, though charges remained pending as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
Norfolk police say officers responded to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital around 11:45 p.m. after a gunshot victim walked in, according to wavy.com. The woman had sustained life-threatening injuries and was later pronounced dead, as first reported by 13News Now.
Police have not released the woman's name, age or any details about what led to the shooting. A suspect was detained at the scene, but charges are pending the outcome of the investigation, which remains ongoing.
How the Shooting Was Reported
Officers were dispatched to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after the woman arrived there on her own, already suffering from what turned out to be fatal wounds. The hospital routinely receives patients from across the Hampton Roads region through EMS transport, transfers from other facilities and walk-ins, per the same account from wavy.com.
No further details about the circumstances of the shooting, the relationship between the woman and the suspect, or a possible motive have been released. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains unclear exactly where along East Virginia Beach Boulevard the shooting took place before the victim made her way to the hospital.
Part of a Rising Toll in Norfolk
The shooting adds to a troubling climb in violence across Norfolk this year. The city recorded 28 homicide incidents and 29 victims through Aug. 25, a 65% jump from the 17 incidents and 18 victims tallied over the same stretch in 2025, according to dailypress.com. Twenty-three of those 28 homicides involved shootings, the outlet reported, even as nonfatal shootings held roughly steady, with 16 reported in the first half of 2026 compared to 17 during the same period a year earlier.
The homicide figures run only through Aug. 25, while the nonfatal-shooting comparison covers the first six months of each year. The homicide total marks a reversal from a brighter trend the city had touted earlier. Norfolk had reported 26 homicides for all of 2025, a 30% decrease from the prior year, and 56 non-fatal shootings, a 24% reduction, according to the City of Norfolk.
Arrest Rates Have Slipped This Year
Solving those cases has also grown harder. Norfolk police had arrested a suspect or suspects in 13 of the city's 28 homicides through Aug. 25, an arrest rate of about 46%, per the Daily Press report. That's down sharply from the same point in 2025, when police had made arrests in 13 of 18 homicides, or 72%.
Other recent Norfolk shootings illustrate how cases like Saturday's can play out. Earlier in October, a 24-year-old Norfolk man was charged with second-degree murder in a fatal shooting on West 30th Street, according to pilotonline.com. In a separate case, Norfolk police said they were continuing to investigate a weekend shooting that left a 20-year-old man dead, per a statement from the Norfolk Police Department.
As of now, no charges have been confirmed in Saturday night's shooting on East Virginia Beach Boulevard, and police have not said whether the detained suspect will ultimately face prosecution. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Norfolk police as the investigation continues.
