A woman crossing in a marked crosswalk near West New Haven Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Melbourne was struck by a Toyota SUV just after midnight Tuesday, and she died at the hospital later that afternoon. Her name has not been released.
Police said the woman was hit as she attempted to cross the roadway in the crosswalk, according to Florida Today. Officers responded to the intersection just after midnight. Florida Today reported that she was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon. WESH 2 News reported that she was taken to a local hospital and died Tuesday.
Melbourne police are withholding the identities of everyone involved pending next-of-kin notification. The department's traffic enforcement unit is handling the investigation, and the crash remains unresolved as detectives continue piecing together what happened at the intersection.
Police Asking For Tips
Investigators have asked anyone with information about the crash to contact Officer Grohman at 321-616-5809. Tipsters who want to remain anonymous can instead call Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS (8477).
A separate incident occurred on October 18, 2022, when one person died and another suffered life-threatening injuries after a Ford pickup truck lost control and went up onto a sidewalk, hitting two people walking along Front Street between New Haven Avenue and Melbourne Avenue just after 7 p.m., according to WESH.
A County With A Troubling Track Record
Brevard County ranks among the top 25 counties in Florida for crashes that cause serious or fatal injuries to pedestrians and bicyclists, per Space Coast Daily. Ninety-six pedestrians died in crashes on Brevard County roads between 2018 and 2022, while another 177 suffered serious injuries, according to a separate report from Florida Today. That same report names Wickham Road and Eau Gallie Boulevard among the Space Coast's top five crash locations, and a Melbourne police spokesperson identified Wickham and Sarno, U.S. 1 and Eau Gallie, U.S. 1 and Sarno, and Babcock and Hibiscus as among the city's worst intersections.
Statewide, Florida recorded 824 pedestrian deaths in 2022, a 1.1% drop from the year before, the Florida Today report notes. More recent state figures show 12,760 pedestrian-related crashes occurred in Florida in 2025, the fifth straight year that number has climbed, even as fatalities and severe injuries from those crashes fell for a third consecutive year, according to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles office.
Enforcement Push Already Underway
The timing follows a pedestrian-safety initiative the Melbourne Police Department had already set in motion. From this month through May 2027, the department planned focused enforcement along corridors with high numbers of pedestrian and bicyclist crashes, per the Space Coast Daily report. Whether that effort touches the stretch of West New Haven Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard where Tuesday's crash occurred has not been addressed in available reporting, and the investigation into what led up to the woman's death continues.
