A woman was struck and killed by a driver late Thursday night on Williamsburg Road in Henrico County, police said, in a crash that prompted an eastbound lane closure and marked the 13th pedestrian-involved crash 8News had reported in the county so far in 2026. Officers found her down in the roadway with obvious signs of trauma, and she died at the scene.

Henrico County Police Division officers were called to the 5700 block of Williamsburg Road at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday after reports of a pedestrian crash, according to WRIC ABC 8News. The driver involved in the crash stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with detectives, the outlet reported.

Police said the investigation remains in its early stages, and the cause of the crash was not available as of Thursday night. By about 9:30 p.m., all eastbound lanes of Williamsburg Road between the crash scene and Airport Drive had been shut down, and drivers were asked to avoid the area temporarily while officers worked the scene.

A Growing Pattern on Henrico Roads

Thursday's death adds to a troubling tally for the county this year. The crash was the 13th pedestrian-involved crash that 8News has reported on in Henrico County in 2026, and the station noted that more than half of those crashes have been deadly.

Henrico has also seen pedestrian crashes with different outcomes in recent months. In August, Virginia State Police investigated a fatal pedestrian crash on Interstate 295 near Route 5 in eastern Henrico County, according to WTVR CBS 6. That crash happened at approximately 11:14 p.m. on southbound I-295 at the 21-mile marker, and troopers who responded located a deceased pedestrian in the travel lanes with injuries consistent with having been struck by a vehicle.

Not every recent case has been fatal. The same station reported that a pedestrian was seriously injured after being struck while crossing W. Broad Street in Henrico, with police responding to the intersection of W. Broad Street and Libbie Avenue at around 8:45 p.m. on a Monday. That woman was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries, and a preliminary investigation indicated an eastbound vehicle struck her as she was crossing in the middle of the road.

What Comes Next

No information about the identity of the woman killed Thursday, or details about the driver, had been released as of the time of reporting. Henrico County police have not said what caused the crash on Williamsburg Road, and the investigation continues.
