A woman was killed after being struck by a vehicle late Friday night on Greenbelt Road in Prince George's County, near the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. Officers found her in the roadway in the 8800 block, close to Goddard Road, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police responded to the area around 11:30 p.m. Friday, according to WJLA, which reported that the driver remained at the scene and was cooperating with investigators. The crash site sits on the stretch of Greenbelt Road that runs near NASA's Goddard campus, according to The Baltimore Banner.
Road Closed for Hours Overnight
Greenbelt Road was shut down at Goddard Road while investigators worked the scene, and it did not reopen until roughly 9:30 a.m. Saturday, per a report from Daily Voice. That meant the busy corridor was closed to traffic for roughly 10 hours overnight while officers documented the scene and conducted their investigation.
As of Saturday, police had not released the woman's identity or offered additional details about what led to the collision, the outlet noted. The investigation remained ongoing, with no further update on the circumstances of the crash made public.
Part of a Grim Pattern on County Roads
The crash marked at least the 61st fatal crash recorded in Prince George's County so far this year, based on Maryland Department of Transportation data cited by the Banner. The tally underscores a road-safety challenge that has repeatedly put Greenbelt Road itself in the spotlight, as the corridor has seen other serious pedestrian incidents in recent months.
WUSA9 also covered the overnight crash, reporting that police found the woman in the street following the deadly collision and that she was pronounced dead at the scene, matching details from other outlets covering the incident on WUSA9. No charges have been announced, and police have not said whether any are expected as the investigation continues.
