Ybor City turns into one sprawling, walkable gallery Thursday from 4 to 9 p.m., when the Ybor Arts Tour returns with more than 40 artist studios, galleries, performance spaces, and hospitality venues spread across the historic district. The free, self-guided event blends visual art, live performance, and literary readings into a single evening, giving locals a reason to wander Ybor's brick streets long after the cigar factories that built the neighborhood went quiet.
The tour, reported by WFLA, describes itself as a biannual neighborhood-wide celebration built around venues that keep dedicated public arts space open year-round. Attendees can navigate the route on foot or hop the trolley between stops, and organizers have posted a full participating-venue list along with an interactive map at kresscontemporary.com/yborartstour. The lineup spans heavy hitters like Tempus Projects, Gallery114@HC at the Ybor City Campus, Kress Contemporary, Tropical Home Fine Art Gallery, Lara the Behind the Shelves art speakeasy, and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts.
A New Show Subverts Corporate Logos Inside Kress Contemporary
One of Thursday's fresh highlights sits inside Honey Gallery, housed within Kress Contemporary. The gallery is opening “Microdose,” a group art exhibition and fashion presentation that twists recognizable corporate logos into commentary on healing and consumer culture, according to Creative Loafing Tampa Bay. Gallery owner Effren Denson collaborated with artist Eito Ohashi and a group of local resident artists on the show, giving Thursday's crowd one more reason to linger inside the building that now anchors the district's arts scene.
That building, the 1929 S.H. Kress & Co. department store, has become a vertical arts hub in its own right. Tempus Projects, the non-profit founded in 2009 by Tampa native Tracy Midulla, moved in during late 2022 to help anchor Kress Contemporary, according to 83 Degrees Media. The building now holds artist studios and creative organizations, contributing to the district's arts scene.
Getting There Without a Car
Tour-goers who'd rather skip parking can lean on the TECO Line Streetcar, which has been fare-free since 2018; in March 2025, Tampa's Community Redevelopment Agency Board approved funding to continue free rides through fiscal year 2025 across the Ybor City, Downtown, and Channel District CRAs. The system set a record with 1,330,932 trips in fiscal year 2024, according to WUSF. Ybor City is also a Community Redevelopment Area, per the City of Tampa.
Gallery114@HC, inside the Performing Arts Building at Hillsborough Community College's Ybor City Campus, is free and open to the public; the college lists street parking and nearby garages, according to Hillsborough Community College. The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts also has a space on the Kress Building's first floor, as the Tampa Bay Times reported at the time.
A Growing Tour Across Ybor City
The tour's growth mirrors the district's broader transformation. Established in 2022, the tour continues to grow, with more than 40 locations on this year's map. Kress Contemporary's Arts Council Honors exhibit featured Hillsborough County grant recipients.
None of this unfolds in a vacuum. Ybor City is one of three National Historic Landmark Districts in Florida, according to 83 Degrees Media. Ybor City's cigar-industry history and multicultural community are part of its past, as the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority notes. Today, galleries and performance stages occupy venues across the historic neighborhood.
