A 41-year-old York man died Saturday after his motorcycle collided with a car that pulled into the roadway during a group ride through Catawissa Township in Columbia County. Shane Wells was riding north with four other motorcyclists when the crash happened, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Columbia County Coroner's Office identified the victim as Shane Wells of York, according to WGAL. Wells was headed north on Numidia Drive with the group when a car pulled into the roadway from an intersecting road and struck him, the station reported. The coroner said Wells was wearing his helmet at the time of the crash.
Wells was riding a blue 2022 Suzuki GSX 1000 and was second in the group of five motorcyclists, according to a report from NorthcentralPA. That outlet reported Wells struck the driver's-side door of a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe after the SUV pulled across Numidia Drive. The SUV's driver, 63-year-old Carol L. Snyder of Paxinos, was taken by ambulance to Bloomsburg Hospital with suspected head and neck injuries, the same report states.
Conflicting Details on Time and Location
Accounts of exactly when and where the crash occurred have varied across outlets. ABC27 reported the crash happened around noon on Route 42 at Kulp Road in Catawissa Township, south of Bloomsburg, while WGAL put the time at around 12:10 p.m. on Numidia Drive in Catawissa Township. Local21 News reported the crash occurred at approximately 12:07 p.m. and that Wells suffered multiple traumatic injuries, a detail that aligns closely with a report from Daily Voice placing the time at around 12:07 p.m. as well, with the passenger car pulling onto the roadway from Kulp Road.
The York County man's death remains under investigation, and the cause and manner of death were pending the conclusion of that investigation, per ABC27. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, according to Local21 News, a timeline also confirmed by WKOK, which reported that Catawissa Police were continuing to investigate the crash.
No Word Yet on Potential Charges
Investigators have not said whether any charges will be filed in connection with the crash. NorthcentralPA's report notes the investigation remains ongoing and that police have not yet determined whether charges are warranted. For now, the circumstances that led the car to enter the roadway in front of the motorcycle group remain part of that unresolved investigation.
