Thousands of anime fans, cosplayers and gamers are set to descend on downtown Detroit as Youmacon returns to Huntington Place from October 29 through November 1. The four-day convention, themed Spirits & Shadows for 2026, brings anime, gaming, cosplay and Japanese pop-culture programming to the city's riverfront convention center over Halloween weekend.
What started as a modest gathering has turned into a regional phenomenon. Founded in 2005 at the Troy Hilton with roughly 1,000 attendees, Youmacon has grown into Michigan's largest anime and gaming convention, drawing approximately 14,000 attendees in 2025, according to 94.7 WCSX. The convention later relocated to downtown Detroit.
Guest ambassadors Mark Cooper and Katie Sonnenberg, along with cosplayer Emily Wallin-Kale, joined Local 4 Live to preview what attendees can expect this year, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. The outlet's coverage, from anchor and reporter Nick Monacelli, previewed the convention's return just days before its opening.
New Leadership Behind the Scenes
Eric Gaiser was identified as Youmacon's new chairman in 2024, per Mirror News.
Under the new leadership, Youmacon has leaned into civic outreach. For the 2026 convention, the organization is offering complimentary weekend badges to active City of Detroit police officers, firefighters and EMT personnel who present valid identification, the WCSX report notes. The policy grants complimentary weekend badges to active municipal emergency workers as a gesture of appreciation.
Charity Ball Proceeds Head to Royal Oak Hospital
Youmacon's philanthropic side extends to its annual Charity Ball. Through that event and a partnership with Extra Life, the convention raised over $20,000 across 2024 and 2025, with 2026 proceeds designated to benefit Corewell Health Children's in Royal Oak, according to the same report. Extra Life partners with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to support regional pediatric healthcare.
Gaming Halls, Artist Alley and Late-Night Programming
The 2026 layout includes video game, arcade and tabletop gaming, alongside a library of more than 1,000 games available for free play. Gaming programming is part of the convention's schedule.
Shoppers will have plenty to browse as well. Youmacon 2026 features Marketplace and Artist Alley space housing over 300 independent artists, vendors and makers selling fandom merchandise and original artwork, as detailed by Tell Toledo. Vendor spaces fill multiple exhibit halls inside the downtown venue.
Youmacon also claims a cultural first: the organization says it was the first anime convention in North America to import and host an authentic Japanese-style Maid Café. Beyond daytime exhibition hours, the 2026 schedule incorporates late-night and 24-hour programming including the Otaku Cabaret, electronic dance music raves hosted by Senpai Squad, and Idolfest concert performances, according to Wikipedia. Age-restricted late-night events require valid photo identification.
Ticket Prices and Venue
Adult three-day badges for Youmacon 2026 start at $80, while Platinum VIP badges cost $250, Chibi youth passes for children ages 5 to 12 cost $20, and single-day tickets range from $35 to $60, per the Tell Toledo report. Admission fees scale upward closer to the event, and children under 5 attend for free.
The host venue itself carries its own Detroit history. The venue completed a $279 million renovation in 2015 to expand its convention capabilities, according to Wikipedia.
