A man was hospitalized with a gunshot wound Monday afternoon after Ypsilanti police responded to a shooting near Hamilton and Harriet streets, an incident that also triggered a brief lockdown at a nearby elementary school. Officers said the man's injury was not believed to be life-threatening.
The Ypsilanti Police Department said officers responded to a complaint about a shooting in the area at approximately 1:44 p.m. Monday, according to a City of Ypsilanti Police Department release. At the scene, officers located blood splatter and a spent shell casing near the 400 block of Harriet, the department said. Officers also found a male victim at a local area hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, and police said the injury was not believed to be life-threatening at the time of the release. ClickOnDetroit first reported on the shooting early Tuesday.
School Lockdown Lifted Once Area Secured
As officers canvassed the neighborhood for evidence and potential witnesses, Perry Elementary School went into a brief lockdown, the police department said. Officers lifted the lockdown once they determined the area was secure, according to the same release. The department has not said how long the lockdown lasted or whether classes resumed normally for the rest of the day.
Police described the case as an open and active investigation and said they would have no further comment at this time, per the department's statement. No additional details about a suspect or a motive have been released. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Cheese at the Ypsilanti Police Department at 734-483-9510, the department said.
Pattern Of Shootings Near The Same Streets
Monday's shooting is not the first to strike this stretch of Ypsilanti's near-south side. In September 2025, police were called to Harriet and South Washington streets for a report of shots fired that damaged a residence in the 500 block of South Hamilton Street and prompted a lockdown at the nearby Perry Early Learning Center, according to MLive. One person was arrested in that case.
Other recent shootings have unfolded blocks away. In late May 2026, a man was found with several gunshot wounds in the 900 block of West Michigan Avenue and was transported to a hospital in stable condition, the Eastern Echo reported, with police saying they did not believe the shooting was random and believed the suspect and victim knew each other. And a woman was injured in a shooting reported at about 2:44 a.m. in the 800 block of Harriet Street, according to CBS News Detroit, which noted she was reported to be in stable condition after being taken to an area hospital.
City Ranked Among Michigan's More Violent Communities
The repeated gunfire comes as Ypsilanti has drawn attention for its violent crime statistics. Ypsilanti recorded 168 violent crimes that year, including 17 rapes, 25 robberies and 126 aggravated assaults, though the city had no homicides, MLive reported, citing the FBI's definition of violent crime as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
