An 11-year-old child was airlifted to a West Virginia hospital after a pickup truck struck two pedestrians crossing State Route 93 in Wellston, Ohio. The child's injuries were described as not life-threatening, while the other pedestrian, a 36-year-old woman, declined medical treatment at the scene.
According to Fox 28, the crash happened on State Route 93 in Wellston and injured two pedestrians who were crossing the roadway. The outlet reported the collision occurred at approximately 7 p.m. Saturday, while a separate account from Scioto Post put the crash at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday evening — the two reports conflict on the exact night it happened.
Per Scioto Post's account, a northbound 2015 Ford F-250 Super Duty struck the two pedestrians as they crossed the road. The pedestrians were identified as 36-year-old Haley Coon and an 11-year-old juvenile, both of Wellston. The truck was driven by 69-year-old Carl Nichols of Wellston, with 50-year-old Shawn Jones, also of Wellston, riding as a passenger.
Child Flown to Huntington Hospital
The 11-year-old was flown by Medflight to Cabell Medical Center in Huntington, West Virginia, with injuries that were described as not life-threatening, according to the Fox 28 report. Coon, the 36-year-old pedestrian, refused medical treatment on scene, the station noted.
Neither Nichols nor Jones, the driver and passenger of the truck, reported any injuries, the same account states. Authorities said the crash remains under investigation, and no further details about how the pedestrians came to be in the roadway have been released.
Highway Patrol Leads Investigation
The Jackson Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation, with assistance from the Wellston Police Department and Jackson County EMS, per the Scioto Post report. No additional findings or citations have been announced as the inquiry continues.
The crash adds to a string of pedestrian incidents along the same corridor this year. In August, a 60-year-old Pomeroy man was critically injured after being struck by a car while walking onto State Route 93 in nearby Hamden, according to the Scioto Valley Guardian. Statewide, 78 percent of fatal pedestrian-related crashes occur in urban areas, according to a bulletin from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
