A 23-year-old man is dead after running from Harris County constable's deputies early Sunday morning, pulling out a handgun during the pursuit and shooting himself, according to investigators.
The incident began around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when Pct. 4 Constable's Office deputies responded to a family disturbance at a home on Carols Way Drive in northwest Harris County, according to Click2Houston. The 23-year-old was reportedly outside the home when deputies arrived, and he took off running as they approached.
Deputies pursued him before the chase ended. Investigators said the man then pulled out a handgun and shot himself; he was pronounced dead at the scene, the station reports.
The HCSO is investigating the case as an in-custody death.
No further details about the man's identity, the exact nature of the family disturbance, or what prompted him to run have been released.
A Jail System Already Under Scrutiny
The case adds to a year of mounting scrutiny over deaths connected to Harris County's criminal justice system. Twenty people died in the Harris County Jail in 2025, twice the 10 deaths reported in 2024, according to the Houston Chronicle. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences ruled 11 of those jail deaths natural and one a homicide, while eight remained without a determined cause of death.
The jail housed an average of almost 9,000 inmates daily in 2025 and had been out of compliance with minimum state standards since January, the Chronicle reported. For comparison, at least 13 people died at Rikers Island in New York City and eight died at Chicago's Cook County Jail that same year, well below Harris County's total. The death is being investigated as an in-custody case.
