A 57-year-old man is dead after being struck while crossing East Chelten Avenue near McMahon Street in Germantown, and the driver who hit him is still missing. The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, and investigators are now combing through evidence as they search for the vehicle involved.
According to 6abc Philadelphia, the crash happened around 8:17 p.m. Monday near the 600 block of East Chelten Avenue, close to the Social Security office. NBC10 Philadelphia, however, reported that the man was struck while walking along East Chelten Avenue at McMahon Street at about 10:30 p.m. that same night — a discrepancy that remains unresolved between the two outlets' accounts.
Neighbors told NBC10 Philadelphia that the driver involved actually stayed at the scene at first, only to speed off once first responders arrived. The station reported that police had not immediately provided a description of the vehicle they are searching for.
Evidence Collected, Driver Still at Large
Investigators gathered evidence at the scene, including a piece of the vehicle's side-view mirror that broke off in the crash, per the 6abc report. Police believe the driver was behind the wheel of a Ford Escape, though that detail has not been independently confirmed in the broader coverage, and the same report notes that police are still searching for the driver involved.
The victim's identity had not been released as of the latest reporting. An investigation remains ongoing, and the search for the driver continues, per the same account. Police have asked anyone with information about the crash or the driver to contact Philadelphia police.
A Citywide Pattern of Pedestrian Risk
The Germantown crash lands amid broader numbers that show pedestrian safety remains a stubborn problem in Philadelphia even as overall traffic deaths fall. The city recorded 89 traffic fatalities in 2025, a 26% drop from the year before, according to PhillyVoice. But serious traffic-crash injuries actually rose 4% over the same period, to 381 reported injuries.
PhillyVoice also reported that about 42% of the city's 2025 traffic deaths were people walking or rolling, and that 46% of everyone involved in fatal crashes since 2020 was walking or cycling. The Philadelphia Inquirer found an even starker imbalance going back further: people walking or using a personal mobility device made up just 6% of crashes citywide from 2002 through 2024, yet accounted for 40% of all crash deaths in that span. The Inquirer also reported that speeding was a factor in 19% of serious-injury and fatal crashes between 2020 and 2024.
Hit-and-run crashes involving pedestrians are not new to the city's neighborhoods. The Philadelphia Police Department's news blotter lists a fatal auto-versus-pedestrian hit-and-run in the 39th District in the early morning hours of July 6, 2023, and another auto-versus-pedestrian hit-and-run in the 14th District on Feb. 27, 2024, at around 11:10 p.m.
For now, the Germantown case remains open, with police still working to identify the driver who left a 57-year-old man dead on East Chelten Avenue. Anyone with information is urged to come forward to investigators as the search continues.
