An 87-year-old Brewster woman died Tuesday morning after her car was struck and flipped during a three-vehicle collision on Danbury Road in the Town of Southeast. Helen T. Gambino was pronounced dead at a Danbury hospital following the crash, which happened around 7:20 a.m. as she attempted a left turn onto the roadway.
New York State Police troopers out of the Brewster barracks were dispatched to the scene for a report of a three-vehicle collision, according to Patch. Gambino was driving a 2024 Subaru and was attempting to turn left from Dingle Ridge Road onto Danbury Road when her vehicle was struck by an eastbound 2015 BMW driven by 19-year-old Caua Dos Santos Rocha of Danbury, Connecticut, per the same account.
Subaru Flipped Into Median After Impact
News 12 Hudson Valley reported that Gambino's overturned car hit another car. The BMW did not stop there — after striking Gambino's car, it went on to hit a third vehicle, a 2009 Honda driven by 23-year-old Devin S. Reynoso, also of Danbury.
Gambino was taken to Danbury Hospital, where she later died from her injuries. Rocha, the BMW driver, was also transported to Danbury Hospital, but with non-life-threatening injuries, the outlet's reporting notes. Reynoso, the driver of the Honda struck in the second impact, was not injured.
A Second Deadly Crash on the Same Road
Tuesday's wreck was not the only fatal crash New York State Police have investigated on that stretch of road in recent years. Troopers also responded to a fatal collision on Danbury Road in January 2024, which the New York State Police said involved a car and a tractor trailer, with troopers dispatched around 6:45 a.m. after a report from Putnam County 911. State Police have not indicated that the two incidents are connected, and no broader pattern of crashes on the road has been established.
No further details on the cause of Tuesday's crash, including any citations or contributing factors, have been released. The investigation into the collision that killed Helen Gambino remains ongoing.
