Basic Firearm-Cleaning Safety
Before cleaning or maintaining a firearm, make sure it is completely unloaded and remove all ammunition from the work area.
Avoid distractions while handling a firearm, treat every weapon as if it were loaded, and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions for each firearm.
Taking extra precautions when handling firearms can help reduce the risk of injury.
A Separate Report Surfaced the Same Day
A Citizen incident report published the evening before described a 911 caller reporting an unconfirmed incident at 6003 Brittmoore Road, with dispatch audio in which a caller said he was requesting EMS after accidentally shooting his hand while cleaning his gun. It is not established whether that report and the Precinct 4 Facebook post describe the same event.
Accidental discharges during firearm cleaning are not isolated to this case. In a separate Harris County incident reported by FOX 26 Houston, a 25-year-old man's weapon discharged while he was cleaning firearms, with the bullet striking his hand before hitting his wife, who later died at the hospital. FOX 26 reported that potential charges in that case remained pending review by the District Attorney's Office or a grand jury.
Part of a String of Recent Shootings in the Precinct
This accidental shooting adds to a run of recent gunfire incidents across Precinct 4's territory. A prior Hoodline report on the precinct noted deputies were called to a residential block where they found a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his hand, with the firearm secured at the scene and the man taken to a hospital.
That same earlier Hoodline coverage detailed other incidents in the area, including a man grazed by gunfire on Blossom Crest Lane after which deputies detained a suspect, and a driver involved in a vehicle crash near Kuykendahl Road and York Creek Drive who was found fatally shot multiple times in late September. The report also noted that Precinct 4 manages more than 670 sworn deputies on an annual budget of nearly $103 million to serve 1.1 million residents.
No further updates on the condition of the man injured near Prairie Spring Lane and Shore Bend Court have been released as the investigation continues.
