A driver was killed and a passenger was airlifted to the hospital after a 2005 Toyota SUV ran off S.C. Highway 201 and slammed into a tree late Saturday night in Abbeville County. The crash happened at around 11:26 p.m. as Halloween night wound down, leaving one person dead and another facing an unknown medical outcome.
According to wspa.com, the SUV was traveling south on S.C. Highway 201 when it left the left side of the roadway and struck a tree. The driver of the vehicle was killed in the crash, and the passenger was reportedly flown by helicopter to Greenville Memorial Hospital. That outlet reported the passenger's condition was unknown as of Saturday night.
The driver's identity had not been released, per the same report, and the wreck remained under investigation. FOX Carolina similarly reported that the South Carolina Highway Patrol said one person died and another was airlifted to a hospital following the single-vehicle wreck, which involved a driver and one passenger in the 2005 Toyota 4Runner.
A Second Fatal Crash in the Same Rural County
Abbeville County, a mostly rural stretch of South Carolina's Upstate, has seen other deadly single-vehicle wrecks in recent memory. In a separate incident reported by wyff4.com, a single-vehicle crash killed one person in the county on a Tuesday morning, when the Abbeville County Coroner's Office was called around 7:45 a.m. to a wreck on Highway 28 between Shrine Club Road and Magnolia Drive.
In that earlier crash, Coroner Brad Evans identified the victim as 34-year-old Codi L. Crawford of Abbeville, who was traveling south on Highway 28 when the crash occurred. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the car left the road, overcorrected, went up an embankment, struck trees and overturned. Abbeville County EMS, Abbeville County Fire, the Abbeville County Sheriff's Office, the Abbeville County Coroner's Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol all responded to that scene.
Investigation Still Underway
No cause has been determined for Saturday night's crash on S.C. Highway 201, and the wreck remains under investigation. The driver's identity has not yet been released, and the passenger's condition following the helicopter flight to Greenville Memorial Hospital remains unknown.
