Amtrak said Train 98, traveling from Miami to New York, struck a person near New Brunswick Station at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
In an account to News 12 New Jersey, Amtrak said the person was trespassing on the tracks when struck. There were 136 passengers and crew members aboard; injuries among them were not reported. The person’s condition had not been immediately disclosed.
Amtrak said it is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident. No further details about the circumstances of the strike have been released.
Conflicting Reports On The Outcome
A separate report from nj.com described the incident differently, saying the delays were caused by an Amtrak train fatally striking a trespasser near New Brunswick. That account could not be independently verified against the condition described by Amtrak, and the two versions remain unreconciled as of this writing.
Nj.com also reported that NJ Transit’s Northeast Corridor line was experiencing delays of up to 45 minutes in both directions following the strike, with the transit agency issuing an alert about the disruption. Riders along the corridor were advised to anticipate longer commutes as a result.
Not The First Such Incident At The Station
The earlier fatality cited here involved a different operator: NJ Transit, rather than Amtrak.
A separate NJ Transit fatality earlier in 2026
News 12 New Jersey reported that a man was struck and killed at the New Brunswick NJ Transit station on Apr 26, 2026; the report said none of the 557 passengers or crew were injured. NJ Transit lists the station at French and Albany Street, between Easton and George Street.
Trespassing Remains A Persistent Rail Safety Problem
Railroad trespassing incidents are not isolated occurrences. A document from the Federal Railroad Administration states that trespassing accidents are among the most prevalent types of railroad accidents, resulting in more deaths and life-changing injuries than many other accident categories, and that the incidence of related casualties has remained relatively consistent over time. The same agency has reported that an average of 458 people are killed in railroad-trespasser incidents each year.
Amtrak’s investigation into Tuesday’s incident near New Brunswick Station remains ongoing, with no additional information released about the person involved or the final disposition of the case.
