Police are investigating a shooting at the Regency Inn in Jacksonville's Arlington area, the latest violent incident to hit a motel along Arlington Expressway that has seen gunfire break out multiple times in recent years.
The investigation was confirmed on Sunday, according to Action News Jax, which reported that officers were on scene at the Regency Inn following a shooting in the area. Details about the circumstances of this latest incident, including any information about victims or suspects, have not yet been released.
The Regency Inn has been the site of repeated violence over the past several years. In June, a fight at the motel turned into gunfire that left two men wounded, according to News4Jax. Jacksonville Sheriff's Office officers were called to the property around 5:40 a.m. that Tuesday and found one man hit in the arm and another hit in the back, both suffering gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening before paramedics took them to a hospital.
Woman Charged After Fight Turns to Gunfire
That June case led to an attempted-murder charge against 36-year-old Jacksonville resident Amber Shealynn Campbell. According to the station's report, an arrest document says Campbell walked up to a 43-year-old victim who was talking with another man, and the report indicates Campbell and the victim did not know each other before the confrontation turned violent. The same account does not detail the disposition of the charge or identify the two men who were shot.
It is not established whether that June shooting is connected to Sunday's reported incident at the same property. The evidence available does not confirm whether the two cases involve the same victims, suspects, or circumstances.
A Motel With a Troubled History
The Regency Inn's history of gunfire stretches back years. Two people were shot at the motel around 2:49 a.m. on November 24, 2019, with one victim in critical but stable condition and the other stable, according to Action News Jax. Investigators blocked off sections of the motel and interviewed witnesses as part of that 2019 investigation.
About a year later, on December 3, 2020, a man was shot in the arm in the Regency Inn's outside courtyard around 8 p.m. and was expected to recover, per News4Jax. Investigators said at the time it was unclear whether that shooting was a targeted attack, though they added there was no outstanding threat to the public.
The pattern of violence at the motel comes against the backdrop of a rising homicide count citywide. The number of homicides in Jacksonville this year had climbed to 50, according to records cited by First Coast News from the Florida Times-Union.
No further information about Sunday's shooting, including the condition of any victims or whether a suspect has been identified, has been made public. Hoodline will update this story as more details become available from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
