At least four Houston-area poker rooms have been targeted by armed robbers over the past month, according to a PokerNews report. Texas Card House Houston was not among the clubs reported robbed, but has added an extra security guard on duty at all times to protect its business and players.
The wave of robberies has rattled the region’s card-room scene, according to PokerNews, which reported that Capri Poker Club, Spades Poker House and Empire Poker Club have all been targeted by armed crews in recent weeks. Texas Card House also beefed up security at its Dallas location, though the outlet reports that move was for reasons unrelated to the Houston robberies.
Capri Poker Club’s Robbery and Looming Move
Capri Poker Club, a 20-table card room in Webster roughly 25 miles from downtown Houston, was robbed about a week before PokerNews published its report. More than a dozen armed robbers reportedly entered the club and demanded money from those inside, according to the outlet. Capri is planning to relocate around the first of the year; the club told PokerNews that its building lease ending, not the robbery, prompted the move.
Spades Poker House in Baytown was also targeted, as was Empire Poker Club, though PokerNews did not detail the circumstances of those incidents. Capri told PokerNews that surveillance video it shared on Facebook appeared to show a suspect matching one from the Spades robbery, a possible connection between the two cases.
No Arrests Yet, But a Suspect Identified
PokerNews reported that no suspects had been arrested in connection with the Houston-area poker room robberies. The outlet said police in the jurisdictions involved appeared to have identified at least one suspect, but no further details about that person’s identity or status had been released.
The robbery spree echoes a 2023 incident at a different Texas Card House location in north Harris County, when several suspects attempted to rob the poker room and a security officer was shot seven times in a gun battle that followed, according to Click2Houston. No customers were hurt in that attack, and the officer, identified only as Officer Jackson, survived and was recovering in the hospital; the suspects fled before Harris County deputies arrived.
A Separate Trend: Robberies of Departing Players
Apart from the poker-room robberies themselves, Houston has also seen a distinct pattern of follow-home robberies targeting players as they leave card clubs. Four men were arrested in connection with an aggravated robbery that happened shortly after a 70-year-old man left Lucky J’s Social Club, according to ABC13. Court records cited by the station say the suspects followed the man from the club’s parking lot to his home in west Houston, where they tried to steal his wallet.
Authorities believe a crew tied to that case is connected to as many as 20 follow-home robberies, with at least 17 linked to a single popular poker venue, ABC13’s report states. Investigators said patrons from at least two other local poker clubs have also been targeted in that scheme and expect more arrests and charges to follow. The station also reported that Lucky J’s operates legally under a private membership model, and uniformed law enforcement officers were providing onsite security when a reporter visited the club.
Crime figures and Texas poker law
For broader city context, Houston Police Department figures show 6,422 robberies in 2024, down 6.56% from 6,873 in 2023. Those citywide totals are not specific to poker rooms. The Houston Police Department comparison lists both figures. The private-membership model used by some clubs does not by itself settle whether a poker game is lawful. The Texas State Law Library explains that Texas law provides a defense to prosecution for some card games when specified conditions are met, while cautioning that determining whether a particular poker game is legal can be difficult.
Houston has also seen follow-home robberies targeting poker players. For now, Texas Card House Houston — one of six TCH properties in Texas — is keeping its added guard in place as investigations continue.
