A man walked into a bank on the 7700 block of Richmond Highway in Hybla Valley Wednesday afternoon, implied he had a weapon, and walked out with cash, triggering a manhunt that brought a police helicopter and K9 units into the Fairfax County neighborhood. The robbery happened at about 12:48 p.m., and officers were still searching for the suspect as of Wednesday afternoon.

Fairfax County police said the man is described as Black and was wearing a black jacket, black shirt and black pants, and that he was carrying a black backpack, according to Patch. Investigators said he may have fled the scene in a gray vehicle, though that detail has not been confirmed. Police had not disclosed how much money was taken.

Helicopter and K9 Units Join the Search

Police announced they were responding to the robbery at 1:22 p.m., roughly half an hour after the man allegedly implied he had a weapon and took money from the bank, per the same account. Fairfax County police said their helicopter and police dog units were responding to assist with the search for the suspect. As of the latest update, the man had not been located.

The robbery was first reported by Daily Voice, which described the case as a developing story out of Fairfax, Virginia. Police asked anyone with information about the robbery or the suspect's whereabouts to call 911.

How Fairfax Police Have Handled Similar Cases

Fairfax County's helicopter unit, known as Fairfax One, has played a direct role in catching bank robbery suspects before. In a March 2024 robbery in Great Falls, the helicopter crew directed officers to a suspect who had fled into Maryland, where Fairfax County Police Department News said Montgomery County police were able to safely take him into custody.

Not every Fairfax bank robbery has involved a weapon, implied or otherwise. In a separate case reported in Burke in February 2024, police said a suspect demanded money but that no weapon was displayed or implied during the interaction, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Wednesday's Hybla Valley case differs in that investigators say the suspect did imply he was armed, though it remains unclear whether an actual weapon was present.

Bank robbery has carried federal weight for nearly a century. An FBI report notes that robbing a national bank or a Federal Reserve state member bank became a federal crime under FBI jurisdiction in 1934. Wednesday's search in Hybla Valley remains an active, developing investigation, and Fairfax County police have not said whether any arrests have been made.
