A campground restroom at Sand Mountain Recreation Area in Churchill County burned to the ground on October 25, and investigators say the fire was no accident. The Bureau of Land Management is now offering a $6,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
According to the Bureau of Land Management - Nevada, the restroom was destroyed in what the agency describes as an apparent arson fire at the popular dune recreation area outside Fallon. Investigators with the Nevada State Police State Fire Marshal Division determined the fire was intentionally set and involved the suspected use of accelerants, as reported by mynews4.com. The building is a total loss, and BLM is leading the investigation.
BLM Seeks Witnesses From Night of the Fire
The agency is asking for help identifying those responsible, specifically seeking anyone who was at Sand Mountain Recreation Area during the evening of October 24 or in the early morning hours of October 25 and observed suspicious activity. BLM also wants to hear from anyone with any information about the fire, regardless of when they were in the area.
Per the same account from mynews4.com, callers may remain anonymous, and information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for the $6,000 reward. Tips can be reported to BLM Law Enforcement, Nevada, by phone at 1-800-782-7463 or by email at [email protected].
What Remains Unknown
Investigators have not said whether anyone has been identified as a suspect or whether an arrest has been made. The cost of the damage and any timeline for repairing or replacing the restroom have not been disclosed. For now, BLM's appeal to the public remains the primary lead in determining who set the fire that destroyed the facility.
