District Also Weighing Buyers for Dawson Elementary
Sunset Valley Elementary isn't the only closed campus in play. Yahoo News reports that the board authorized Segura to move forward with potential property transactions involving Bedichek Middle School, Sunset Valley Elementary and Dawson Elementary. Across the district's closed properties, interest has come from housing and real estate companies, two private schools and a youth soccer club.
Austin ISD has tasked Segura with completing the Sunset Valley transaction by June 15, 2027. That timeline echoes language the district used earlier this year: in a March report, officials told the Austin American-Statesman there was no specific timeline for determining the surplus properties' next use, as the district planned to evaluate reuse options using a rubric weighing community feedback, market value, building condition, historical relevance, and zoning and land use.
A Budget Crunch Drove the Closures
The Statesman's March report tied the school closures to a decades-long decline in enrollment and a $65 million budget deficit, noting officials expected to end the school year with a $49 million deficit. The Board of Trustees declared the Sunset Valley property surplus in June and authorized the superintendent to continue the process of selling it. The district says market conditions support disposition through a sale to maximize land value and that doing so would eliminate long-term maintenance obligations on a building the district no longer uses as a school.
Austin ISD has said community feedback gathered throughout the repurposing process will be shared with applicants during the proposal process, and that residents have emphasized thoughtful development, traffic considerations, and adherence to strict impervious-cover limitations. The campus's future remains unresolved as the district considers a sale.
