A California Highway Patrol chase along the westbound 10 Freeway in Baldwin Park ended in a crash early Saturday that left three people dead, officials say. The pursuit began near Azusa Avenue and ended several exits later at Francisquito Avenue, where the fleeing car collided with a dividing barrier.
The chase started around 4:10 a.m. Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol, as reported by KTLA. The pursued vehicle attempted to exit the freeway at Francisquito Avenue — four exits from where the chase began — before slamming into the barrier, CHP told the outlet. Authorities had not immediately clarified why the pursuit began in the first place.
One person inside the car was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Three others were taken to area hospitals, and a CHP spokesperson told KTLA that two of those three later died after arriving at the hospital. A fourth person remained alive, though their condition was not immediately known.
Three Dead After Baldwin Park Freeway Crash
CHP officers began pursuing the vehicle near Azusa Avenue on the westbound 10 Freeway at 4:10 a.m. Saturday. One person died at the scene, while three others were taken to hospitals; two later died.
The condition of the third person taken to a hospital was not immediately known.
Video obtained by KTLA showed a heavily damaged red SUV at the crash site, along with people being loaded into ambulances. Officials have released no further details about the incident, and it remains unclear what prompted the pursuit.
Francisquito Off-Ramp Has Seen Fatal Crashes Before
This is not the first fatal wreck at that stretch of freeway. In March 2025, a driver died after a 2013 Nissan cargo van crashed at the same westbound 10 Freeway Francisquito Avenue off-ramp, according to Baldwin Park News Online. CHP investigators said that van struck a concrete barrier and overturned. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner later identified the driver as 35-year-old Daniel Gutierrez Corona of Fontana and ruled his death accidental.
Statewide, fatal outcomes from police pursuits are relatively rare but not unheard of. A California Highway Patrol legislative report found that of the 11,985 pursuits reported to the agency in 2022, 2,275 resulted in a crash, and 32 of those crashes were fatal. That figure reflects statewide trends and is not a measure of Saturday's crash specifically.
No further details have been released about Saturday's chase, including the identities of those killed or the status of the surviving passenger. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
