A bicyclist died at the hospital after being hit by a pickup truck at Mack Road and Stockton Boulevard in south Sacramento Monday evening, with a bystander rushing in to help pull him from the lanes of traffic before paramedics arrived.
The crash was reported around 5:39 p.m. at the intersection, according to the California Highway Patrol as reported by KCRA. The pickup truck had been traveling westbound and was turning right onto northbound Stockton Boulevard into the right lane when the driver felt an impact to the right side of the truck, per CHP. The driver then pulled into a parking lot, and with the help of a Good Samaritan, pulled the rider and bike out of the lanes, the station reported.
Rider Transferred With Major Injuries
The bicyclist was taken to a hospital with major injuries and later died there, CHP said, according to the same report. A separate dispatch feed tracking the incident shows a timeline consistent with that account: an entry at 5:37 p.m. flagged a possible vehicle-versus-bicycle incident, followed at 5:40 p.m., three minutes later, by a dispatch describing a bike rider versus a pickup truck, according to chpfatal.com. At 5:41 p.m., the feed noted that another party had pulled the male rider out of the roadway, and by 6:02 p.m. it recorded that the Sacramento Fire Department had transferred someone with major injuries to Kaiser South.
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash, per CHP's account relayed by the outlet. No further details on what led to the collision, or any citations stemming from it, were included in the reporting.
Stockton Boulevard Has Seen Other Fatal Crashes
Monday's crash is not the only recent fatal collision involving a bicyclist along the Stockton Boulevard corridor. In a separate incident, a bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle near Broadway and Stockton Boulevard, with Sacramento police officers responding shortly after 11 a.m. and finding the rider already dead at the scene, according to The Sacramento Bee. In that case, the driver remained at the scene when officers arrived, and the department's Major Collision Investigation Unit and crime scene team took over the probe, the Bee reported.
Another separate crash was reported near Stockton Boulevard and 20th Avenue in South Sacramento around 7 p.m. on a Saturday evening, according to FOX40. Sacramento Fire Department personnel pronounced the man dead at the scene in that case, and police said the driver fled after hitting the bicyclist, per the station's report.
