A 13-year-old Bordentown Regional Middle School student has died after being struck by a vehicle while riding an e-scooter on Route 130 in Bordentown Township. The girl was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden following the crash and died from her injuries Sunday morning, according to township officials' statement.
Bordentown Township officials said the girl died after being struck by a vehicle, confirming the loss in a statement reported by TAPinto. The crash happened Friday near Route 130 and Burlington Road, though published accounts differ on the exact time — 6abc reported the collision occurred just before 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Route 130 and Route 662, while CBS News Philadelphia cited Burlington County dispatch in placing it just after 3 p.m.
According to Patch, the girl was riding an e-scooter and attempting to cross the road when she was hit by a pickup truck. CBS News Philadelphia reported that another child riding an e-scooter in the crash was not injured, and that the vehicle that struck the girl stayed on the scene. It remains unclear what led to the crash, per the same outlet's reporting.
Route 130 Shut Down for Hours During Investigation
The roadway was closed in both directions for hours while investigators worked the scene, Patch reported, before it eventually reopened. A contemporaneous clip from FOX Local Philadelphia described the incident as involving two scooters and a pickup truck, with one juvenile reported in critical condition at the time — details that preceded confirmation of the girl's death.
Residents who live near the corridor told 6abc that the stretch of Route 130 is no stranger to crashes and reckless driving, though no broader crash statistics for the roadway were available. In September, a pedestrian was fatally struck on Route 130 in nearby Edgewater Park, according to a separate 6abc report, though that incident was unrelated to Friday's crash.
Township Calls Grieving Student ‘One of Our Own’
Bordentown Township officials described the girl as “one of our own” and said the community was heartbroken, including the first responders who cared for her during the crash response. Officials added that they are holding the girl's family, friends and classmates in their thoughts as they grieve, per the statement relayed through TAPinto.
Officials said they are working with the Bordentown Regional School District and the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office to provide support for everyone affected, including first responders. The Burlington County Crisis Response Team is expected to be available to Bordentown Regional Middle School students this week as the community processes the loss.
The Burlington County Prosecutor's Office is expected to release further updates, according to the township's statement. Anyone with information about the crash can contact Burlington County Central Communications at (609) 265-7113 or by email at [email protected].
