A woman and a man ended up in the hospital on San Antonio's northwest side Friday evening after a car ran a red light and slammed into their vehicle at the intersection of Culebra Road and Timber View Drive — and then both drivers responsible for causing the crash took off without stopping to help.
According to WOAI, the two victims were traveling southbound on Culebra Road into the intersection when another car heading west on Timber View Drive ran the red light and struck their vehicle. A second car then crashed into the vehicle carrying the woman and man, the station reported. Both of the drivers who caused the collisions fled the scene without stopping to help, per the same account.
Paramedics took the woman and man to the hospital, where police said they sustained only minor injuries. The station's report notes that the investigation remains active and ongoing, and police plan to charge both fleeing drivers with causing injury in a traffic crash once they are located.
A Road Already Known for Danger
This isn't the first time Culebra Road has made headlines for serious crashes. TxDOT data cited by KSAT showed the corridor saw more than 110 fatal and serious-injury crashes over a five-year span leading up to a December 2025 report, and city officials have labeled it one of San Antonio's “high-injury” streets due to heavy traffic, frequent driveways, and pedestrians. People who live and work near Culebra Road told KSAT that speeding and red-light running are common along the road and its nearby intersections.
Just two days before that report, a man died and two other people were hospitalized in a fiery crash at Culebra and Ingram roads, KSAT reported. The pattern of severe wrecks along the corridor has also included a fatal hit-and-run in September 2022, when bicyclist Geoffrey Shafer was struck and killed while riding in the left lane of Culebra Road, according to News4SanAntonio. Kenneth Relitz was later arrested and charged with collision involving death in that case, with court records showing his bond set at $75,000 in April 2024; his trial was set to begin in February 2026, the outlet reported.
City's Broader Push for Safer Streets
San Antonio has been working to address corridors like Culebra Road through its Vision Zero program, established in 2015, and a Vision Zero Action Plan created in 2024 that KSAT described as the first of its kind in Texas. The city also launched a High-Injury Network Dashboard built from TxDOT crash data spanning 2018 through 2022, part of a larger $1.2 million campaign called Keep Crossing Safe aimed at identifying the city's most dangerous crash hotspots.
For now, the search continues for the two drivers who fled Friday's crash at Culebra and Timber View. Police have not released additional details on the suspects' identities as the investigation continues.
