Buda has its first official bookstore. Two Doors Down Bookshop opened Oct. 24 at 200 S. Main St. in downtown Buda, giving the city a dedicated spot for new reads, bookish gifts and a gathering place that owner Sarah Ray once ran out of her own home.
The shop's debut caps nearly two years of work for Ray, who started Two Doors Down Bookshop as a home-based business in early 2025, according to the Buda Economic Development Corporation. The Buda EDC called the new shop the first official bookstore in Buda, and Ray said in a statement that the venture started as a passion project in her home and she's grateful to bring it to Main Street.
Before landing on Main Street, Ray built her following through pop-ups and an online storefront. She told Hays Free Press that she started doing a pop-up bookstore and online bookstore, then joined the Buda EDC's cohort in January to solidify her business plan and goals. The outlet reported that her shop was originally slated to open in Buda's The Roundabout, but a lengthy timeline prompted her to look elsewhere, and the historic home at 200 S. Main St. became available in May.
From Incubator to Storefront
Ray's path ran through the Buda HIVE, the Buda EDC's startup incubator that gives entrepreneurs resources, mentorship and collaborative support. She graduated from Cohort 3 of the program earlier this year, the economic development corporation said. Jacqueline Martinez, director of HIVE & Business Support at the Buda EDC, said Ray's growth from a home-based business to a Main Street storefront exemplifies the purpose of the HIVE program, adding that she was excited to see a HIVE graduate open in downtown Buda and was proud of Ray.
Buda EDC CEO Jennifer Storm said the shop would give readers, families and friends a place to gather downtown. Ray echoed that sentiment, saying she wanted a cozy place for neighbors to find books, enjoy wine and connect with other readers, per the EDC's statement.
What's on the Shelves — and a Wine Question
The shop carries curated reads across genres along with cozy bookish gifts, and it plans to host book-themed events, the Buda EDC said. Accounts differ on the wine offering: the EDC's announcement described the shop as already offering wine, while Hays Free Press reported that Ray hopes to eventually add a wine component to the store, whether through selling bottles or pouring a glass during events.
The shop's arrival follows an earlier report from Community Impact, which in December 2025 covered the business hosting pop-ups in Buda ahead of brick-and-mortar construction and at the time projected a 2027 opening. The storefront ultimately opened sooner, debuting on Main Street in late October.
Soft-Opening Hours
During its soft opening, the shop has been operating from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, according to the Hays Free Press report. Two Doors Down Bookshop's website lists further details for browsers planning a visit.
