Someone tried to sneak into a restricted section of a major natural gas pipeline facility in Carlstadt, New Jersey early Wednesday morning by going through the sewer system, triggering a scramble of law enforcement resources including a bomb squad and K-9 unit. The attempt happened outside a field station for the Transco pipeline, a massive energy corridor that carries roughly 15% of the nation's natural gas from Texas to New York City.
The pipeline is owned and operated by the Williams Company, and a spokesperson for the company told PIX11 that Transco personnel noticed suspicious activity outside the facility shortly after midnight and immediately alerted local law enforcement. According to the company, the individuals involved did not actually enter the facility, and the incident caused no impact to pipeline operations.
A source closely connected to the Carlstadt Police Department told the outlet that someone was pulled out through a manhole cover while reportedly trying to access the restricted area. Carlstadt police confirmed only that an investigation was underway, without elaborating further on what officers found at the scene.
Specialized Units Descend On The Scene
The response escalated quickly once local police got involved. The Bergen County Sheriff's Office said its K-9 unit, bomb squad, and crime investigation team were called to the scene around 3:30 a.m., according to the same PIX11 report — a show of force suggesting investigators were not initially ruling anything out.
RLS Media offered a somewhat different account of scale, reporting that Carlstadt police apprehended several individuals who were allegedly accessing a manhole leading to a restricted area associated with the Williams Gas Pipeline, rather than describing a single person. That outlet pegged the initial report time at around 3:27 a.m. Wednesday, closely matching the sheriff's office timeline. RLS Media said the circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and it was unclear whether any charges had been filed.
Conflicting Reports On Federal Involvement
Accounts of federal involvement in the response have diverged. A source connected to the investigation reportedly indicated that the FBI and DEA were involved, but PIX11 later reported that both the DEA's New York and New Jersey field offices said they were not involved. The FBI's Newark field office had not responded to the station's request for comment at the time of its report, leaving that piece of the puzzle unresolved.
The targeted facility is identified in a 2022 Williams Company filing as Transco's Station 240, an LNG plant located at 718 Paterson Plank Road in Carlstadt. Per that Williams Companies application, the station serves as a near-market gas storage system designed to meet supply during peak demand periods — underscoring why even an unsuccessful attempt to breach it drew such a heavy law enforcement presence.
As of Wednesday, neither PIX11 nor RLS Media had reported a resolution to the investigation. No agency has publicly detailed the identities or motives of those involved, and the full sequence of events at the Carlstadt site remains under investigation.
