A teenage boy was left fighting for his life Wednesday afternoon after a vehicle struck him on Stringfellow Road near Chantilly High School, according to Fairfax County police. The driver stayed at the scene as officers and crash investigators responded amid lane closures on the busy roadway.

Fairfax County police officers were called to the 4200 block of Stringfellow Road around 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to FOX 5 DC. The teen was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, and the vehicle’s driver remained on scene as the investigation got underway. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives were called in to piece together what happened, according to Patch.

Per the same Patch report, the Virginia Department of Transportation placed the start of the incident at 3:42 p.m. near mile marker 3.1 on Route 645 — Stringfellow Road’s official designation — right by Chantilly High School. Police have not released the teenager’s identity or any details about how the collision occurred, the outlet noted.

Conflicting Reports on Which Lanes Shut Down

Exactly which lanes of Stringfellow Road were closed depends on which source you check. FOX 5 DC reported that northbound lanes were closed in connection with the crash, while Patch cited a 4:18 p.m. VDOT update indicating that all eastbound and westbound lanes were shut down because of the crash. The discrepancy has not been resolved in available reporting.

The crash remains under investigation, and no further information about the circumstances leading up to the collision has been made public.

A Familiar Stretch of Road for Pedestrian Danger

This is not the first time a pedestrian has been struck near the same school. Back in December 2023, a child was hit by a driver at the intersection of Stringfellow Road and Poplar Tree Road, close to Chantilly High School, according to FFXnow. That child was hospitalized but was later reported in stable condition.

Pedestrian safety near Fairfax County schools has drawn renewed scrutiny this fall. After a 16-year-old student was hit by a car while walking to South Lakes High School in Reston on Sept. 1, the county temporarily reinstated crossing guards at eight high schools, including Chantilly, according to WJLA. The station reported that the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors had voted to eliminate those crossing guard services as part of the previous year’s budget process, before the September crash prompted a reversal.

A Countywide Pattern of Pedestrian Crashes

Wednesday’s crash adds to what has become a troubling year for pedestrians across Fairfax County. Over the weekend of October 16 through 18, three separate crashes on county roads left two pedestrians seriously injured and one dead, FFXnow reported. One of those crashes involved an adult man struck by a Hyundai Elantra while crossing Route 29 outside a crosswalk near Blake Lane in Oakton, leaving him with life-threatening injuries.

FFXnow’s count put Fairfax County’s 2026 pedestrian death toll at 18 following a fatal Route 28 crash in October. The numbers reflect a longer-term trend: a 2022 compilation by Greater Greater Washington tallied 188 crashes in which drivers struck pedestrians countywide, with 53 people seriously injured and 32 killed, and found that pedestrian fatalities in Fairfax more than doubled between 2021 and 2022.

No details have emerged on whether the driver involved in Wednesday’s crash faces any charges, and the teenager’s name had not been released. He suffered life-threatening injuries. Hoodline will update this story as more information becomes available.
