An adult was shot and wounded Friday night in Columbia, with police describing the victim as stable but offering few other details as the investigation continues. The shooting happened around 9 p.m. in the 5000 block of Fairfield Road, a stretch of road that has seen other gunfire incidents in recent years.
According to WLTX, the Columbia Police Department said the investigation remains active and that it believes the shooting was an isolated incident. Officers have not released the victim's name, specified the nature of their injuries, or said whether anyone has been arrested.
What Police Have Said So Far
Beyond confirming that the wounded person is an adult and in stable condition, police have kept details of the case close to the vest. The station's report notes that no arrest information has been made public, and investigators have not said what led up to the shooting or who may have been involved.
Anyone with information has been asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC, per the same account. It's the only tip line police have pointed the public toward as they continue working the case.
Fairfield Road's History of Gunfire
Friday's shooting adds to a string of gun violence reports tied to the Fairfield Road corridor over the years, though nothing in the available record ties those earlier incidents to this one. A report from Yahoo News described a separate Sunday evening shooting in Columbia in which officers were called around 7 p.m. to the 500 block of Alcott Drive, near Fairfield Road, and found a man with a gunshot wound to the lower body. Police said at the time that no arrests had been made as of 7:30 p.m., though the scene had been secured while the investigation continued.
In February 2025, WIS News 10 reported that police investigated a shooting near a shopping center off Fairfield Road in which at least two people fired shots at each other, though no one was hurt. And years earlier, the City of Columbia Police Department announced an arrest in June 2020 after a 61-year-old man was fatally shot at a Family Dollar store at 5304 Fairfield Road.
A separate Jan. 3 shooting on Alcott Drive near Fairfield Road, reported by The Post and Courier, left a 24-year-old struck by gunfire and surviving; that victim has not been publicly identified. None of these earlier incidents has been linked to Friday's shooting, and police have characterized this latest case as standing on its own.
For now, the investigation into Friday's shooting remains open, with Columbia police asking residents who may have seen or heard anything in the area to come forward.
