A 38-year-old Riverside man is behind bars after Corona police say he slid his cellphone under a fitting-room door to film a teenage girl as she changed, then bolted on foot when officers showed up. Ivan Gallardo Lopez didn't get far — per a report from KTLA, a bystander reportedly offered responding officers a ride in his truck, and they cornered Lopez in a nearby parking lot.
According to KTLA, the Corona Police Department identified the suspect as Ivan Gallardo Lopez of Riverside and said he was arrested for allegedly placing his phone under a fitting-room door while a teenage girl was changing inside a business on the 1200 block of Magnolia Avenue. Police say Lopez fled on foot once officers arrived at the scene, triggering a short foot pursuit that ended with his capture nearby.
Authorities say Lopez is a registered sex offender, though the station's report does not specify the underlying conviction. He now faces several charges connected to child annoyance and unlawful recording, and he remained in custody on $1 million bail as of the report, according to KTLA.
What registered status tells us
California’s Megan’s Law website says people convicted of specified sex crimes must register. That general requirement does not identify Lopez’s underlying conviction or establish the current allegation.
Body-Camera Video Shows the Takedown
Body-camera footage released October 30 shows officers cornering Lopez in a parking lot and ordering him to the ground, as reported by KTLA. The footage captures the final moments of the chase that began outside the Magnolia Avenue business and ended with Lopez's arrest.
Corona police publicly thanked the community member who helped them catch up with Lopez, saying the partnership between residents and law enforcement mattered in bringing the case to a close. The department did not name the bystander in its statement, as noted by KTLA.
