A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle in Cresskill on Friday evening, and investigators say the crash will not result in any criminal charges or motor vehicle violations. Cresskill police responded to the scene around 5:30 p.m. and found the man in critical condition before he was rushed to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to Daily Voice, police responded on Maple Street and Knickerbocker Road around that time. The outlet reports the pedestrian was male and in critical condition when officers arrived, and that he was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The crash was investigated by Cresskill police along with the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Team and the Bergen County Sheriff's Department Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the outlet's report states. After reviewing the circumstances, investigators determined that no criminal charges or motor vehicle violations would be issued in connection with the crash.
What Remains Unknown
Police have not released the pedestrian's identity, and the same report notes that the exact location of the crash has not been made public, even as officers confirmed they responded to the Maple Street and Knickerbocker Road area. The Cresskill Police Department expressed condolences to the man's family and loved ones, per the outlet's account.
A Pattern Across North Jersey
Friday's crash adds to a string of fatal pedestrian collisions that have struck Bergen County and the surrounding region this year. In July, NJ.com reported that authorities were investigating two separate fatal pedestrian crashes within the same week in North Jersey. One involved a vehicle striking and killing a 65-year-old woman near Bloomfield Avenue and Shafto Street in Clifton, while the other saw an SUV turning left from Center Avenue onto Main Street fatally strike a pedestrian in a crosswalk in Fort Lee.
Not every recent case in the county has ended without charges. A fatal pedestrian crash in Hackensack led to a hit-and-run charge against a 38-year-old Bergenfield resident, according to Patch. And in October 2024, a Kearny man was arrested and charged after a fatal hit-and-run crash in Lyndhurst killed 57-year-old George Arnold, who was pronounced dead at the scene, as reported by NJ.com.
No further details about Friday's crash in Cresskill have been released, and it remains unclear whether investigators will share additional information as the case moves forward.
