Separately, Houston TranStar listed an active incident on southbound IH-69 Southwest at Fannin Street.
A Freeway With a History of Deadly Closures
Sunday's closure is not the first time the Southwest Freeway has ground to a halt after a fatal crash. ABC13 previously reported that a major crash shut down the Southwest Freeway southbound lanes for several hours on a Sunday morning, placing that incident south of Bissonnet Street around 4 a.m. In January 2025, ABC13 also reported that all southbound lanes of the freeway at Kirby Drive were closed following a separate deadly crash.
The cause of the wreck and whether fog contributed to it remained unconfirmed as the investigation continued.
