A Denver mother’s worst few minutes unfolded at Washington Park this past summer when her young son rode off on his bicycle for a lap around the park and didn’t come back. What started as a routine outing turned into a coordinated police search — and ended with an officer pedaling alongside the boy, trading notes on bike tricks.
The concerned mother reported that her son had ridden off on his bicycle and failed to return after what was supposed to be a single loop around the park, according to the Denver Police Department. The incident happened on July 19. Sergeant Joyce and Officers Ladouceur, Byrd, Clay, and Nunez responded.
A Tense Search Ends at the Park's South End
District 3 bicycle officers also ramped up patrols throughout Washington Park as the search continued, per the department’s account. The extra eyes on the ground paid off: officers located the child safe and unharmed at the south end of the park, bringing a swift resolution to what could have been a far more frightening outcome for the family.
A Mother's Relief, and a Department's Message
Denver Police shared the story under the title “COMPASSION IN ACTION.”
Cases like this one fit into a much larger picture tracked statewide. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation notes that many children return safely. Colorado’s reporting program breaks down resolved cases by age, race, and sex, tracking outcomes that range from “contact by a law enforcement agency” to “voluntarily returned,” according to the bureau.
For one Denver family, though, the outcome was as good as it gets — a short scare, a safe return, and an officer willing to ride the rest of the loop just to keep a kid smiling.
