Plans and opening on Justin Lane

When Community Impact covered Dia’s Market’s planned opening in 2016, it described a grocery and deli intended to offer staples, specialty foods and locally sourced items, along with fresh coffee, beer and wine and an outdoor patio. The planned location was 812 Justin Lane, according to Community Impact.

David and Amanda Hopper began work on the space in 2014, and the shop opened in June 2016, CultureMap Austin reported. The store’s name came from the initials of the couple’s three children, Dylan, Isobel and Alexander, according to CultureMap Austin.

A changing neighborhood grocery business

A 2020 Statesman report described Dia’s offerings as including baked goods, cheeses, coffee, hot soups, beer and wine, as well as freshly made breakfast and lunch sandwiches. At the time, Hopper hoped to expand online ordering from deli orders to groceries.

The Statesman also reported that small grocery stores were appearing around Austin as alternatives to large supermarkets. Hopper said interest in local products had begun to rise even before the pandemic, according to the report.

The shop is scheduled to close in November

Dia’s Market & Deli, at 812 Justin Lane, is expected to close at the end of November after 10 years in business. CultureMap reported the timing based on the shop’s social-media announcement. In its account of that post, the outlet said Hopper cited slower customer traffic and the economics of renewing the lease as reasons for the decision. The post also referred to expected nearby development that did not take place.

The announcement did not specify a final day or mention closing specials, CultureMap reported. It invited customers to visit and say farewell to the team.
