Downtown Greenville's Main Street Bridge will once again transform into one long communal dinner table on November 23, as Gratefull GVL returns for its free Thanksgiving meal. The event is scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, November 23, with the bridge closed to traffic for the occasion.
The gathering, now led by United Way of Greenville County, is presented by Prisma Health, according to gratefullgvl.org. Organizers describe Gratefull GVL as a free public Thanksgiving meal meant to bring neighbors, coworkers, families, and strangers together in gratitude and belonging, per the event website. All food is generously donated and safely prepared by local restaurant partners, organizers say, and it costs nothing to attend.
As Greenville Online reports, the 2024 event featured food from 44 Greenville restaurants and drew nearly 5,000 attendees. That scale reflects how far the gathering has grown since it began.
A New Long-Term Home for an Old Tradition
Gratefull GVL got its start in 2019, paused during the pandemic, and returned in 2024, according to United Way of Greenville County. In 2025, the event's founders approached United Way about becoming its long-term home, the nonprofit says, and United Way has since taken over as the event's leader for 2026. The organization notes that Gratefull GVL has welcomed thousands of Greenville County residents to a free shared Thanksgiving-week meal on Main Street since it began.
Greenville Journal reports that United Way of Greenville County is the new long-term host of Gratefull GVL, with Prisma Health continuing as presenting sponsor. The outlet also reports that Greenville Drive owners Craig and Vicki Brown will serve as honorary co-chairs for this year's event.
Conversation Cards and a Mission Beyond the Meal
Each table at this year's event will include conversation cards designed to spark meaningful moments among attendees, according to the event website. The idea reflects Gratefull GVL's stated belief that everyone deserves a seat at the table. Organizers also say surplus funds from the event support local food-share programs that feed families year-round.
Gratefull GVL invites people to donate, volunteer, or become event sponsors ahead of the meal. The event website lists a November 23 date for the gathering in its main event listing, though a later section of the same site references November 25 for the meal and conversation on the bridge — a discrepancy that has not been resolved across the available sourcing.
How the Event Has Evolved Since 2019
The tradition looked different in its earliest form. A 2019 account from Greenville Online described the inaugural gathering as a free citywide Thanksgiving potluck, with a mix of food from local restaurants and homemade dishes that attendees brought to share. That first event featured 50 eight-foot tables and 400 chairs set up on the Main Street bridge, with organizer Project Host expecting at least 2,000 attendees and 475 volunteers signed up to help.
By 2024, expectations had grown considerably. A Gratefull GVL FAQ for that year's event projected more than 5,000 people would come together, though that figure reflected organizers' expectations rather than a confirmed attendance total. With United Way of Greenville County now steering the event's future and Prisma Health backing it as presenting sponsor, Gratefull GVL appears positioned to keep expanding its footprint on the Main Street Bridge for years to come.
