A car slammed into Key 2 Fitness on East Main Street in Spartanburg shortly before noon Friday after a 71-year-old driver mixed up the gas and brake pedals while trying to park. No injuries were reported, though the crash left visible damage to both the vehicle and the front of the gym.
According to WSPA 7News, police said the woman was pulling into the parking lot when she accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending her car into the building. Photos from the scene showed the vehicle lodged against the fitness center's exterior, with damage to the structure itself. Crews from the Poplar Springs, Drayton and Roebuck fire departments all responded to assist at the scene, the station reported.
No Injuries Despite the Impact
Despite the force of the crash, nobody inside the gym or in the vehicle was hurt, per the outlet's report. The driver's pedal mix-up appears to have been the sole cause cited by police, with no further details released about potential charges or the extent of the damage to the building.
Crashes into buildings have cropped up elsewhere in Spartanburg this year, though the available reporting does not point to any citywide pattern. In May, police said a vehicle crashed into a building in downtown Spartanburg on a Wednesday afternoon, as reported by Fox Carolina. The following month, a blue 2018 Subaru SUV crashed near the drive-through area of a bank, severely damaging the building, though no one was hurt, Fox Carolina reported separately.
Other Local Crashes Involved Intersections
A separate incident covered by WYFF4 traced back to a collision between two cars at the intersection of Magnolia Street and West Saint John Street. Police said both drivers claimed they had the green light, and one of the vehicles ultimately struck the building at 101 West Saint John Street. That case, like Friday's crash at Key 2 Fitness, ended without anyone being seriously hurt.
