A driver died early Sunday after being thrown from a vehicle that rolled over near Fountain Boulevard and El Paso Street in Colorado Springs, police said. The car had struck construction barricades and several parked vehicles before flipping, and the driver, the only person inside, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Colorado Springs police responded to the single-vehicle crash call around 2:30 a.m., according to FOX21 News, though KKTV reported the crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. Officers arriving near the intersection found an overturned vehicle and a person lying outside it, according to a report from the Colorado Springs Gazette. No one else survived or was found at the scene, the Gazette's report noted.
Car Left the Road Before Flipping
Police said the driver had been heading westbound in the 700 block of Fountain Boulevard when the car swerved off the roadway, struck construction barricades, and then hit several vehicles parked along the north curb before rolling over, per FOX21's account. KKTV's reporting similarly described the vehicle going off the road, hitting the barricades and parked cars, and rolling over in the process. The driver was ejected during the crash, according to police cited by KKTV.
Fountain Boulevard was closed between Royer and Prospect streets for several hours while crews worked the scene, according to the Gazette, and reopened at about 8:35 a.m. Police said the Major Crash Team took over the investigation, per FOX21's report, and the cause of the crash remained unresolved as of Sunday.
Part of a Rising Toll on Colorado Springs Roads
Sunday's crash adds to a string of fatal rollovers that have struck Colorado Springs streets in recent months. In October, a passenger was ejected and killed in a rollover near South Chelton Road and Marlow Circle, and police arrested the 20-year-old driver on suspicion of vehicular homicide and driving under the influence, according to KRDO. In July, a 25-year-old identified by the El Paso County Coroner's Office as D'Neico Moe was ejected and killed in a rollover on East Platte Avenue, while two other occupants of that vehicle were hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the same FOX21 report on that crash noted.
Another fatal rollover near Barnes and Peterson Roads in June left a driver ejected and later dead at the hospital, FOX21 reported separately. Police said that June crash marked the city's 29th traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 20 recorded at the same point the previous year, according to the outlet's report. Colorado Springs police data has previously noted that 2020 stood as the city's deadliest year on record for traffic crashes, with 51 people killed.
