A fire tore through an apartment in the 9200 block of Kanis Road in Little Rock early Thursday, leaving five residents without a place to call home. The blaze broke out shortly after 1 a.m. and caused enough damage to displace them all, though officials say no one was hurt.
Little Rock firefighters responded to the scene and worked to contain the flames once crews arrived, according to KARK. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident, the station said, and the cause of the fire has not been released as the investigation continues.
Cause Still Unknown as Investigation Continues
Investigators have not said what sparked the fire, and the inquiry remains open.
This is not the first time fire crews have been called to the same stretch of Kanis Road. A previous blaze at Out In the Woods Apartments, located at 9201 Kanis Road, destroyed one building entirely and badly damaged a second, according to KATV. That fire displaced roughly 30 residents, though no injuries were reported in that incident either.
Other Recent Little Rock Apartment Fires
Little Rock has seen a string of apartment fires in recent memory. After the Out In the Woods fire, the American Red Cross stepped in to provide food, clothing, and emergency hotel stays for seven families, per KATV's reporting. A Red Cross officer cited in that same report noted the organization had also responded to the complex the previous June, when 25 residents were displaced.
Separately, a fire that broke out around 3 a.m. off South Louisiana Street in Little Rock damaged three apartment units and left some residents displaced, officials told KARK in another report. That fire was extinguished, though the cause was never made public.
Another blaze at the Pinnacle Valley View apartments destroyed all four units in one building and displaced five tenants, KATV reported. Firefighters brought that fire under control after a 30-minute fight, and three of the displaced tenants had already been notified they would receive assistance from the Red Cross, while fire marshals investigated the cause.
Pattern of Displacement Across the City
In February, a late-night fire at the Fairfield Apartments on Green Mountain Drive displaced 16 families, according to KATV. The Red Cross again assisted displaced residents, and temporary housing was set up at a local church while apartment management worked to secure tenants' belongings and coordinate with insurance providers.
For now, the Kanis Road fire remains under investigation, with no word yet on what caused it or what support the five displaced residents may receive.
