The H-E-B Plus at 10718 Potranco Road on San Antonio's Far West Side is set for a sweeping renovation, with construction estimated to cost $32.8 million. The project is scheduled to begin in September 2027 and wrap up by December 2028.
The scope of the planned work has not been detailed. According to San Antonio Express-News, the 150,000-square-foot store originally opened in 2005, and H-E-B did not respond to the outlet's request for comment before publication.
News of the Potranco Road project arrived as San Antonio Business Journal also identified a renovation project at the Far West Side store, with a September 2027 start and December 2028 completion timeline.
A Price Tag Well Above the Norm
The scale of the spending stands out. Renovation budgets at H-E-B's other locations average about $5 million, the Express-News reported, meaning the Potranco Road job is estimated to cost more than six times a typical remodel. By comparison, a Fresh Initiative project announced for H-E-B's Schertz store along Interstate 35 carries an estimated price tag of $1,597,822 and covers 1,450 square feet of interior space, according to a report from Yahoo News that cited state filings. That Schertz work is scheduled to begin February 19, 2027, and wrap up a month later, on March 19.
A similar Fresh Initiative filing in New Braunfels was estimated to cost $502,000, per the same Yahoo report. The Schertz and New Braunfels projects are both part of H-E-B's broader Fresh Initiative program, which has included plans for food-focused upgrades to existing stores in San Antonio, Austin, Georgetown, Leander, Killeen, Kerrville and Corpus Christi.
Other San Antonio Remodels Underway
The Potranco Road project is not H-E-B's only major renovation in progress around San Antonio. The company is completing a $15.6 million renovation of its Las Palmas store at 721 Castroville Road, with the Express-News reporting it should be finished by 2027. KSAT reported in August that H-E-B expected the Las Palmas work to be completed by late 2027, and that the store would remain “fully functional” throughout construction.
At Las Palmas, the planned upgrades include a larger pharmacy with two drive-thru lanes and a relocated curbside pickup area shifted to dedicated parking spaces, KSAT reported. The renovated store is also expected to get a wider selection of grab-and-go meals and a brand-new Sushiya area.
Part of a Broader Build-Out
The Potranco Road announcement comes as H-E-B continues to grow its footprint across the region. The company has opened more than 30 stores across Texas in recent years, the Express-News reported, and is separately planning two large facilities at its East Side distribution campus: a $175 million refrigerated facility and a $125 million bakery production facility.
The Far West Side has been a focus of H-E-B investment before. A store that opened nearby in 2020 anchored a new master-planned community and included a drive-thru pharmacy, a gas station and a car wash, according to a San Antonio Business Journal report at the time. For now, residents near Potranco Road will have to wait until the 2027 construction start to learn exactly what the $32.8 million project will bring to their neighborhood store.
