All northbound mainlanes of SH 87 on the Bolivar Peninsula are shut down near Loop 108/7th Street after a fatal crash Friday afternoon, according to a traffic alert from the state highway agency. The alert cautioned that the available detour is a rough substitute for the closed route.
The closure was announced at 5:59 p.m. Friday by TxDOT-HOU District
, which posted that “SH 87 northbound on the Bolivar Peninsula at Loop 108/ 7th St all mainlanes blocked due to fatal crash.” The agency's post went on to warn travelers, “Expect delays. Detour not ideal.” No additional details about the crash, the vehicles involved, or how long the shutdown might last were included in the alert.
A Narrow Highway With Few Alternatives
The closure was on the Bolivar Peninsula, and TxDOT warned that the detour was not ideal.
TxDOT-HOU District, based in Houston, is responsible for planning, designing, building, and maintaining the state transportation system across Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, and Waller counties. The agency's txdothouston account posted the closure alert.
Peninsula Has Seen Fatal Crashes Before
An earlier fatal crash was reported in 2024 in Port Bolivar. The Galveston County Daily News reported that a motorcycle crash there left one person dead and three injured.
No information is currently available on whether Friday's closure on SH 87 has been lifted or how long lanes were expected to remain blocked. Drivers planning to travel the peninsula should anticipate delays and check current conditions before heading out.
